Leadership Definition Position Paper : Justin Gamache

Leadership Definition Position

This paper is about the position of leadership that I would incorporate in my own life and career. Good leadership is largely about making change that reveals new horizons, encourages people to dream, and defines a single most important purpose for the role humanity needs to play in the world today. In this paper, you will hear my definition of leadership, and my approach to leadership. You will also read about essentials traits and qualities of a leader, what makes a leader successful, and the relationship between the approaches and definition with my view of leadership included.

My Definition of Leadership

First, we are to understand what leadership is? Leadership is where one person stands ahead of 7.5 billion people to lead them in the directions of their dreams. Leadership is making dreams happen, and encourages others not just to follow one person but to work together for the betterment of humanity. Good leadership dismisses greed and provides fruit for every living soul on planet earth.

My Approach to Leadership

My approach to leadership is to transform the individuals who ask for my guidance. This is difficult to say exactly how I would transform an individual because I simply cannot be in that person shoes at their current time. I can try to get an idea of where they want to go, provide an example to getting there, and then tell them to pursue that dream in which they want to follow. I lead others to pursue their dreams, and to follow their intuition that makes those dreams come alive. When a person comes in a stumble because they are having a difficult time following their dreams, I simple tell them look at every great leader we’ve ever had in the world today and yesterday. If following your dreams were easy we wouldn’t have great leaders, we would just have leaders. You have to work hard at what you want to achieve, don’t give up for a second because once you give up you have to start all over again. My approach to leadership is empower others to follow and live their dreams, to work together to better humanity, and to create the future we all want.

Essentials Traits and Qualities of a Leader

There are many traits and qualities of a leader, but there are some that are the most important of the all. The most important traits and qualities of a leader according Northouse (2016) are; “Intelligence, self-confidence, determination, integrity, and sociability. Some qualities of a leader are; conscientiousness, openness, low neuroticism, and agreeableness” (p. 40). We can agree on these traits if one understands the ability of leadership, though through my approach, I would also put able to spend in meditation to clear the mind so that they can be able to focus on the problems of today.  Leadership involves these traits and qualities because a leader is supposed to lead their people in the right direction.

What is the Mark of a Successful Leader

There are five marks of a successful leader; a great leader involves 1. Moral courage, 2. Judgement, 3. A sense of priority, 4. The disposal of concentration of effort, and 5. Humor” (Johnson, 2005). A one size fits all to a successful leader, but it takes hard work and understanding to maintain its success. I believe these marks of a successful leader are correct, however I would add that a successful leader must be willing to enhance the performance of his people by allowing them to follow their dreams. As I’ve grown up in this world I’ve always had people telling me what to do, how to do it, and to not do this. Though the biggest example I’ve learned was my ability to understand and follow my dreams. Your dreams are the biggest opportunity to maintaining your leadership skills, and so you must work hard at projecting them and encourage those around you to follow their dreams as well. Let your dreams lead you for they provide you with your greatest adventure.

Relationship between the Approaches and Definitions described in the Text and My View of Leadership.

Leadership: Theory and Practice discusses three approaches in leadership. There is the trait approach were traits “influence leadership” (Northouse, p. 19). The Skills approach “takes a leader-centered perspective on leadership, and shifts the way of thinking from a focus on personality characteristics” (Northouse, p. 43). The behavioral approach which emphasizes on the behavior of the leader characteristics. Northouse (2016) found that “researchers that were studying the behavioral approach determined that leadership is composed of two general kinds of behaviors: task behaviors and relationship behaviors” (p. 71). The task behavior leaders worked towards goals accomplishments, while the relationship behavior leaders helped their followers become more comfortable.

My view on the three approaches to leaderships requires the simplexity use of all three. We need leaders that can have traits, skills, and understanding of behaviors. The way I see this is if a person running for the highest respected position in the United States does not have traits, skills and understandings of behaviors how can they lead 321.4 million people. I know it can be difficult because leadership is not supposed to be easy, leadership is supposed to be difficult so that way we can overcome our way of thinking from the past to improve the lives of all the people.

Conclusion

While leadership is supposed to be difficult great leaders are meant to overcome this difficult task of leadership to change our way of thinking from the past, so that the lives of all the people can improve. Leadership is where one person stands ahead of 7.5 billion people to lead them in the directions of their dreams. Leadership is making dreams happen, and encourages others not just to follow one person but to work together for the betterment of humanity. Good leadership dismisses greed and provides fruit for every living soul on planet earth, and leaders need to exhibit the traits, skills, and behavioral approaches so that they can bring together their people to work towards the betterment of a company or organization.
